New Vehicle Registration

This transaction is used to issue a license plate when a vehicle is not registered in Indiana. An Indiana resident who purchases a vehicle from another Indiana resident will need a “new” registration transaction from the title. Indiana residents must register all newly acquired, unregistered vehicles within 45 days after the date on which the vehicle was purchased or acquired, and all vehicles owned by the person within 60 days after becoming a new resident. If changing your legal address during the transaction, you must provide two proofs of address.

The vehicle must first be titled. Visit our Vehicle Transaction Guide to learn more.

Amend a Registration

This transaction is used to update information that has changed or is incorrect due to various reasons. If changing your legal address during the transaction, you must provide two proofs of address.

All of the following scenarios listed will require you to visit a branch:

  • BMV error.
  • Body change: usedwhen the vehicle’s body style has changed (ex. Bus to Recreational Vehicle (RV)).
  • County change: two proofs of address are needed for this amendment.
  • Changing from a non-farm plate to a farm plate or vice versa.
  • Expiration change, which may occur for two different reasons:
    • Your last name may have changed due to a marriage, divorce, or court order. You are required to present documentation if the name has not already been changed on the Indiana driver’s license, or
    • The Registration License Type may have changed (ex. Church bus to Special Purpose Bus. Church Bus plates expire on 2/28, whereas the Special Purpose Bus expires of 9/28).
  • Other corrections:
    • Adding or removing owners from a registration (must first be added/removed from the title).
    • Changing a name on a registration (marriage, divorce, or court order) that does not change the registration's expiration. You must presentproper documentation proving the name change.
    • Changing the address on a certificate of registration that does not involve a county change. Two proofs of address are required to amend your legal address.
  • Plate type change:
    • Changing from one plate design to another (Ex: plate change from an "In God We Trust" plate to a passenger plate).
    • Re-weight up or down (Ex: Changing from a light truck 11,000 to a heavy truck 26,000).
  • Report Plate as Stolen:
    • If you believe your vehicle license plate was stolen, you may report it as stolen to law enforcement. When reporting a plate as stolen to the BMV, you must have law enforcement complete the Report of Stolen License Plate or Registration Decal – State Form 37135 and present the form to a BMV branch at the time of application for a replacement license plate.
    • If you do not know if the plate has been lost or stolen, you may decide if you would like to report it as stolen to law enforcement. The plate is not required to be reported as stolen. When a license plate number has been flagged as stolen, a replacement license plate number (new plate number) must be issued. A duplicate license plate number (same plate number) cannot be re-issued. When a plate number has been flagged as stolen, it will be ineligible for re-issuance for 5 years from the date that the stolen status was applied to the plate number by the BMV.
  • Theft Recovery: used when registration amendment is needed after a vehicle has been recovered after a theft.

What If My Plate Was Stolen?

If you believe your vehicle license plate was stolen, you may report it as stolen to law enforcement. When reporting a plate as stolen to the BMV, you must have law enforcement complete the Report of Stolen License Plate or Registration Decal – State Form 37135 and present the form to a BMV branch at the time of application for a replacement license plate.

Vehicle Registrations (12)Registration Renewal Notices

The BMV sends renewal reminders for vehicle and watercraft registrations. The type of notice you receive depends on preferences within your myBMV account as well as your historical renewal activity.

Here’s how you can find out how you will receive renewal information:

  • If you are opted into email reminders, both your registration and credential reminders will be sent by email. The email is sent from bmvcommunications@bmv.in.gov.
  • If you are opted into text reminders, both your registration and credential reminders will be sent by text. The text is sent from 46268.
  • If you are opted into US Mail and you renewed in a branch, online, or at a kiosk for each of the last 2 years, you will receive a postcard reminder for both your registration and credential.
  • If you are opted into US Mail and you renewed through the mail, or over the phone, for either of the last 2 years, you will receive a long-form preprint reminder for your registration and a postcard reminder for your credential.
  • If this is your first renewal for a particular vehicle or watercraft, you will receive a postcard reminder for that vehicle or watercraft. This includes new vehicles.

The BMV offers several options for you to renew your vehicle and watercraft registration including online, at a kiosk, at a branch, and by mail. If you have received a text message, email, or postcard renewal reminder for registration and wish to renew by mail, please review the Registration Renewal by Mail process.

Please review the FAQs below to clarify any questions about the registration renewal postcards.

  • I did not receive a renewal notice in the mail.

We send renewal notices a few different ways based on your preference. The default is US Mail. Most folks receive a postcard, but some receive a long form printed notice. If you set it up in your account, you can choose email or text.

If a customer expresses a desire to change, you can add, “You can go online to myBMV to set or change your reminder preference. It is under the Notification Preferences section.”

  • What can I do if I am having trouble accessing my account through myBMV?

You can try to reset your password on myBMV.com. It will use the email address on file at the time you created the account. You can also call our BMV Contact Center at 888-692-6841. Hours for the Contact Center are Mon. through Fri. from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

  • Why did I get a postcard?

Postcards are sent if you completed a vehicle/watercraft renewal online through myBMV, at a BMV Connect kiosk, or at a branch for 2 consecutive years, and you are opted in for a mail reminder. Customers who purchase new vehicles will also receive a postcard.

  • Why did I get a postcard for one vehicle and a preprint for another?

The most common reason for this is a new vehicle purchase. New vehicles receive a postcard. If you renewed your other vehicle(s) by mail those would get a preprint. You can renew all your vehicles by mail by following the Registration Renewal by Mail process.

  • How can I get my cost for renewal?

You can find your cost to renew online via myBMV, at a BMV Connect kiosk, or at a branch. You are not required to have a myBMV account to renew online.

  • How can I mail my renewal in?

If you wish to mail your renewal, you can do so by following the Registration Renewal by Mail process.

  • How can I set my registration renewal reminder preference?

You can go online to myBMV to set your reminder preference. It is under the Notification Preferences section.
